Our History
Matteo Scamardella came to Staten Island in 1906 from Bacoli, Italy. In 1927, while operating Scamardella Bakery on Broadway with his wife Sophie and driving for West Brighton funeral homes, Matteo and his wife Sophie became interested in the industry of funeral service and then went to school to become what was then known as an undertaker.
As time went on Matteo and his wife Sophie both undertakers, started to delegate some of the daily operations of the funeral home to their two sons, Matteo Jr. and Joseph. After the passing of Matteo Sr. in 1968, Joseph Scamardella along with his mother Sophie continued to uphold the tradition of the Scamardella Funeral Home Inc. S. Joann Scamardella daughter of Joseph Scamardella accomplished her lifelong dream on January 1, 1980 when she became a Registered Nurse.
Following in her family’s footsteps she attended and graduated from American Academy of McAllister Institute cum Laude in September 1981. Ms. Scamardella worked as a registered nurse while raising her son Robert. She also assisted her late father Joseph Scamardella (Owner of the Scamardella Funeral Home, Inc.), during that same time frame.
On February 28, 1992 when her father suddenly died she took a leave of absence from her nursing profession, to operate and manage the family owned funeral establishment. The family tradition of providing personalized service for families in need continued with no interruption to the now 3rd generation family business. February 28, 2011 was Ms. Scamardella’s 19th year as the owner /manager of the Scamardella Funeral Home, Inc. serving bereaved families.
Ms. Scamardella is the only female licensed funeral director, owner and manager on Staten Island.
