Obituary of Fernando Vicoli

Fernando (Fred) Vicoli was born on May 30, 1932 at Fordham Hospital in the Bronx, NYC. His loving parents, Liberata and Nicholas Vicoli, were immigrants from Abruzzi, Italy. In 1934 the family moved to Staten Island, where Fernando was Baptized at the original St. Benedicta Church in West Brighton. In 1937, at the age of five, his parents took him to Italy, where he attended both private and public schools, but in 1947, after World war II, the family returned to America and settled again in Staten Island. He continued his studies, In 1948 he graduated from St. John villa Academy; In 1952 he received a Diploma from St. Peter's High School; In June of 1956 A BA from Manhattan College and In June of 1957 an MA from Columbia University. A few months later, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his full Two year term until he was Honorably Discharged. In August of 1957 with the Rank of SP4 (He ad completed his Basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and for the remaining time was stationed at Ft. Meyer, VA. Ther'e he was assigned to the Education Center during the day and in the evening he was given the opportunity to attend Russian classes at the Pentagon. Once back to civilian life, he took courses in Education at Hunter College and Wagner College. At the same time he applied for a Teachers license from the NYC Board of Education and else where. Eventually he received Italian and French and Homebound Licenses from the NYC Board of Education and Italian and French Licenses from the State of New York and the State of New Jersey. He began teaching in 1960 at the old Tottenville High school, then at John Jay High School in Brooklyn, at James Madison High School in Brooklyn, eventually he transferred to Home instruction in Staten Island, where he was appointed language specialist to teach Homebound kids (He taught Italian, Spanish, French and Latin). He retired in 1987 and traveled mostly to Europe and America. His main hobby is Reading and Listening to music. Frenando Vicoli passed away on September 14, 2020 at the age of 88.
