Alice Bernice Harris Roach
On Saturday morning, February 25, 2023, Alice entered into eternal rest from her earthly labor of the beautiful age of 91.
Alice was born to Robert E. Harris and Dorothy Travis Harris on April 26, 1931, in Chula, Amelia County, Virginia.
As a young child her family moved to Manhattan, eventually relocating to West Brighton, SINY in 1940. She attended P.S. 18 and Curtis High School.
At the age of 11, Alice accepted Christ and was baptized on April 5, 1942 at Shiloh AME Zion Church. Her favorite scripture was ll John 3:4(KJV) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Alice met and married Albert Roach. Of this union they had two beautiful children, Doreen (deceased)and Derek Roach, which she loved dearly and would do anything for.
Alice raised her two grandsons, Andre and Rene Khamis, fondly known as her boys, after the passing of her daughter Doreen.
Alice worked at The New York Telephone Company and later The New York Public Library which she retired from to care for her husband.
After the passing of her husband, she went to work for Councilwomen Debi Rose, Senator Vincent Gentile and Senator Seymour Lachlan as a liaison, helping the community for a total of four years. She also helped John DelGornio during his campaign.
Alice was a member of Rossville AME Zion Church of Sandy Ground. She served as a member of the trustee board, as President of Stewardess and the Ministry of Kindness.
She was a member of the NAACP and Staten Island African American Political Association (SIAAPA).
Alice was predeceased by her husband Albert Roach and her daughter Doreen Roach Mitchell. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Derek Roach, daughter-in-law Kiah Roach. Her grandsons Andre and Rene Khamis, Two granddaughters Mia, and Aria Roach.Stepdaughter Denise Roach. Her brother Ronald Harris,five great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two nieces Stephanie Cooper Bynes, Laura Harris Monroe, five nephews. Rory, Jamie, Robert Satchell, Russell and ( Ronald Jr. Deceased) Harris and a host of cousins, family and friends.
