Obituary of Barry Vandunk
Barry Anthony Lovelace Vandunk, 46, of Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, passed away on December 7, 2023, after a series of unfortunate events following a scheduled surgery. He endured a valiant battle for his life for eight long months.
Barry was born on January 7, 1977, to Barry Lee Vandunk and Brenda Denise Lovelace in Brooklyn, New York. He was the first of a long list of “Gertrude’s” grandchildren. He was soon followed by his cousin Kwandza and sister Belinda. The three were inseparable growing up in BedStuy, Brooklyn during the 80’s constantly surrounded by a host of aunts and uncles, where it seemed the good times would never end. Barry was everyone’s pride and joy. He often amazed his family with his intelligence, strength, and competitive nature. He was a thrill seeker and was always on the hunt for his next adventure! In his early years he developed a love for cars, bikes, gaming systems and the outdoors.
As a student, Barry was an avid learner and high achiever who was always on the honor roll effortlessly. He had an in-depth understanding of math and science and enjoyed conducting experiments. His teenage years were spent between Brooklyn and Staten Island where he and his family eventually relocated. He attended Franklin K. Lane High School and went on to receive his GED and enrolled in several certificate programs including medical assistant and construction. He started his own business and named it “Paint Can” where he offered painting and remodeling services to residential and commercial clients.
Barry had an infectious laugh and an unmatched sense of humor. He enjoyed the simple things in life like cooking, music, and dancing. He was daring, fearless and enjoyed the casino and gambling. Throughout his life he accumulated many nicknames like Lil’ Barry, Barry B, Blue II, and K.O. to name a few. Barry adored looking fresh and clean. His big personality and charismatic demeanor were appealing to the masses. He had a huge heart and lived a very colorful life. He will be remembered as a loving son, a brother who brightened every room he entered and a father who exhibited courage until his last days.
Barry was predeceased by his father and first-born son Barry Lovelace. He is survived by his mother Brenda, children: Ziretangyaa Del Hampton, Courtland Lovelace, Keyszon Lovelace, Qwaddel Lovelace and Nahzier Vandunk and grandchildren Logan Lovelace, Ny’Zon Lovelace, Caleb Lovelace and Kahliay Lovelace. He leaves to mourn his sisters Belinda and Dr. Crystal Lovelace, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and friends too many to name.
